I just realized that the movie implies Superman shouldn't try to change history, but he goes ahead and does it anyway, without any actual consequence. I sure didn't see that when I was a kid!

The awkward consequence of his experience is the realization that if something is terribly wrong, GO BACK IN TIME and PREVENT IT! He could have done the same thing in Superman Returns. Harharhar.
