I wonder if there’s a strong positive correlation between being a fan of sci-fi and respect for progressive values like equality and human rights. Binging Star Trek certainly makes me feel more liberal

because sci-fi usually tells us 'you are not alone'. because sci-fi usually tells us 'live together or perish'. usually.
Conservative values tell you "they're out to get you and kill you" while liberal values tell you "there's something out there greater than what you are". So yeah
If you like reading science fiction, usually you are the kind that is willing, even looking forward to, being swept awayby basic premises of the "improbable" as being "reality" (and then taken to the logical extreme). So i think typically it will not be as difficult to imagine relatively utopian scenarios that realists would scoff at.
It goes both ways though. There's also a lot of dystopian sci-fi. I guess the important thing is that liking science fiction means being open to or willing to entertain new ideas
There's also military SF, which has quite a lot of writers and readers who like the idea of sexist/ white-savior story lines like John Ringo (who is, despite writing SF, anti-science enough to think climate change is a myth), etc. So it's not all SF =P The divide is pretty stark if you check out the Sad/Rabid Puppies trolling. Then there's those haters among the grand ole men of SF like Orson Scott Card, and some badly behaved sexists who I shall not name….
Maybe. I'm not into sci-fi, and I'm definitely conservative and traditional with my views. But while I'm not to liberal, I'm not far right either.
omg you science-believe rs are going straight to hell you heathens
I was about to say "the most well-known sci-fi authors seem to be progressive", but then I remembered Orson Scott Card exists. My observation was probably influenced by my watching Star Trek Voyager these past few weeks. Maybe I should limit the scope of my hypothesis from "fans of sci-fi" to "fans of Star Trek"
