This is tough. Lots of the top anime in MyAnimeList ( http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php ) are shounen, which easily get high scores for just being fun. And the few anime I rated 10/10 have low scores in the list. That said, I think Mushishi is a fair compromise between stuff I like, and stuff other people like.

Rurouni Kenshin, Ranma 1/2, Cowboy Bebop, Log Horizon, Puella Magi Madoka Magica fer me. Honorable mentions. Dot-hack, but it got too dragging, and should've only been 1 season. Ditto the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, exactly as above. I do like Neon Genesis Evangelion as well, but I felt that the symbolism hurt it as much as it supported it. Too many red herrings.
