So, lawyer friends, a question: Why do court cases take so long in this country? What percentage of it is (a) not enough judges; (b) procedural inefficiencies; (c) incompetent lawyers/prosecutors; (d) corruption; (e) something else?
Is there something being done? I remember reading before that the current SC was instituting some measures to hasten stuff, but there anything effective that been implemented?
(I ask purely out of curiosity, arising from another discussion)

Sometimes you have to wonder if we’re living in a Douglas Adams novel
“On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people.”
“Odd,” said Arthur, “I thought you said it was a democracy.”
“I did,” said Ford. “It is.”
“So,” said Arthur, hoping he wasn’t sounding ridiculously obtuse, “why don’t the people get rid of the lizards?”
“It honestly doesn’t occur to them,” said Ford. “They’ve all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they’ve voted in more or less approximates to the government they want.”
“You mean they actually vote for the lizards?”
“Oh yes,” said Ford with a shrug, “of course.”
“But,” said Arthur, going for the big one again, “why?”
“Because if they didn’t vote for a lizard,” said Ford, “the wrong lizard might get in.”

So, rewatching the first Bay Transformers. Sam literally has no words to describe the transformers he first encounters. He lives in a world that has no sci-fi concept of cars transforming into robots, and by extension, anything else transforming into robots. That means their universe has no Transformers, Gobots, Voltron, Robotech, Voltes V, probably Gundam, and so on. What kind of cartoons did they have as a kid?

Genuinely curious: were they actually able to cite any data or studies to show that the death penalty would help prevent crime?
-
Right. I watched Logan yesterday.
LOGAN Spoiler-Free review:
- great movie. Best of the Wolverine trilogy, easily
- the tone is very different from any previous X-men movies. I’d say it’s closer to something like John Wick
- good send-off for Jackman and Stewart, since this is their last movie in these roles. Stewart finally given more acting to do than just sitting in a chair being bald and pretending to think at you
- very, very violent and lots of swearing. Don’t bring your kids
- no, it doesn’t really follow the Old Man Logan comicbook storyline
- need to listen closely to dialogue to figure out what is implied to have happened to the X-men
- Post-credits scene: I was told there wasn’t any, and I really had to pee, so I didn’t wait for it -_-
- Magugustuhan ba ni mama? Probably not!
- IMAX or not? I did not go IMAX, and I don’t think the movie would have been significantly improved by IMAX or 3d

If you want to shut up the critics of the drug war, all you have to do is:
- Cite the statistics (and where they’re sourced from) justifying claims of an epidemic
- Tell us what mechanisms you are putting in place to prevent abuse of increased police activity
- Tell us what procedures are in place to verify that any kills during police operations are justified
- Tell us what mechanisms are available for those falsely placed on drug watchlists or those falsely accused of drug crimes to clear themselves
- Give us regular updates on the status of investigations into the spate of homicides particularly those that seem drug-related
- Tell us what mechanisms are being put in place to prevent further murders
- Take down more of the supply side, i.e. large scale drug busts, top level drug lords, etc
Are these suggestions helpful enough?
Instead what we get is:
- random anecdotes (“sabi ng mga lgu madami na daw ulit!")
- blanket statements with nothing to back them up (“4M na ang addict! We are observing human rights! We are just doing our jobs”), minsan may kasamang iyak
- condescending dismissal of any criticism from outside the country (“the filipino people support us”, “you dont know how it is here”)
- the president backing a team of cops accused of executing a high profile prisoner
- the foreign secretary saying critics are just helping criminals (if you’re killing them illegally, you’re criminals too!)
- death penalty rammed down our throats (AFAIK wala pa rin nacite na justifications or studies showing this would be helpful sa prevention, feel free to correct me if wrong)
We are even told that drugs are becoming resurgent because tokhang was suspended, e hindi pala effective yung solution nyo so bakit nyo pinagpipilitan? Is the expectation that we should have tokhang forever?
Anlakas magcall for unity tapos critics are either given meaningless patronizing statements or outright dismissed or even bullied. If you want unity, maybe take other people’s concerns into account and not just your own.
Last drug war rant since Lent na. After Easter na ulit (or hopefully di na kelangan at that time?)

“If one meets a powerful person–Rupert Murdoch, perhaps, or Joe Stalin or Hitler–one can ask five questions: what power do you have; where did you get it; in whose interests do you exercise it; to whom are you accountable; and, how can we get rid of you? Anyone who cannot answer the last of those questions does not live in a democratic system.” - British politician Tony Benn (paraphrased by Optimus Prime :p)

EDSA was about ousting a despot. If an administration takes this time to jail the opposition and be paranoid about “destabilization plots”, that says a lot doesn’t it?

Arrival spoiler-free review:
- first half a bit boring
- Forrest Whitaker is hard to understand
- not sure if it was just the cinema I was at, but the audio and the lighting seemed quite bad at some points
- that being said, the movie was ok. I think it’s comparable to, but not as good as, Interstellar
- if you watch it with people who don’t pay attention, you’ll have to explain stuff

IDK, saying that all these things have been problems for a long time seems a bit lame if you’re defending someone who ran on promises of “change”

Huh, a lot of this sounds very familiar.
