I think the most common reason I look at contacts on my phone is to check what my own number is

I can't seem to memorize my SG number, and I really sympathize. That said, the Contacts list is there more for editing and "hey, this is your list of contacts" - a lot of the usability comes through when you say, make a call to Officemate Bob who you just talked to yesterday. It really is supposed to be Fire and Forget. XD
