  • As is tradition, my spoiler-free review of The Force Awakens:

    • rewatching the original trilogy immediately before this one was well worth it
    • wow a lot of beautiful shots and landscapes, from beginning to end
    • the heart of the true Star Wars fan will skip a beat every time the background music comes up
    • it feels like coming home. A lot of familiar elements, interspersed with the new. A nice way to transition into a new trilogy
    • I often wonder what it must have felt like to watch the original Star Wars: A New Hope in the theaters back then. This is how I imagined it to be
    • Try not to think about the fact that Episode VIII won’t come until 2017 :D
    • quite possibly the best movie of 2015
    • on the ride home I was like: Ten ten tenetenenten tenetenenten tentenenten … (okay, maybe I was like that before the movie too)
    • …yeah, it was ok :D
  • Finally finished watching Jessica Jones. It started out a bit slow, but the pace picked up after a few episodes. It’s a different kind of grimdark than Daredevil was, but everything about the plot was great and tight. I was worried about what they planned to do with Kilgrave but it turned out he might have been a better villain here than Fisk was in Daredevil

  • Ma: So si Anakin diba parang bata sya ni Obi-wan?

    Me: Oo

Ma: Pero alam nya na anak nya?

    Me: Anak nino?

Ma: Si Anakin di ba anak ni Obi-wan?

Me: Hah? San mo nakuha yan?

Ma: Di ba si Obi-wan si Darth Vader?

    :D

  • As I mentioned in a separate thread, one of the things that I find most scary is the fanaticism and unquestioning loyalty of the Duterte supporters online. The attached photo is a sampling of comments in Carlos Conde’s post that contained links to reports from various international organisations regarding the DDS killings. (Carlos Conde’s original post: https://www.facebook.com/carlosconde.ph/photos/a.527960643942515.1073741825.136793129725937/943857712352804/?type=3)

The comments read worse than a Youtube comments section, with responses typically:

    1. assuming anyone who is against their candidate is automatically either a criminal or a paid hack
    2. advocating murder and/or rape or some other form of violence against anyone who disagrees
    3. pointing to other problems (saf44/mamasapano) as if the existence of those problems makes this one any less problematic
    4. assuming it’s a demolition job meant to derail Duterte’s campaign (which would be more believable)

I’m not saying all Duterte supporters are like this, but his campaign isn’t going to garner much support from social media moderates like me if majority of the supporters argue in this manner. Ganito ba ang discussions sa Davao? Is this the kind of mentality we can expect under a Duterte presidency?

(And can someone enlighten me on the “Imperator Obesiosa” reference? I have no idea what that is supposed to be)

(I am also mildly annoyed by the “Du30” thing, parang ang jejemon lang lol)

  • “products below are not supported with Windows 10. Although Canon will not issue drivers for these products to support the Windows 10 operating system, the Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers should function in the new Windows 10 environment with some limitations which are currently unknown to Canon. " Damn you Canon and your forced obsolescence! Can anyone recommend a good network printer/scanner combo that isn’t expensive?

  • I wonder how bad the performance on that matching job is. 60M x4 is a lot of records, but I assume that they generate some sort of unique hash for each fingerprint that should be indexed to make matching faster. If not, /glare

Also, do go check your registration details people~

  • Things software development projects can learn from “The Martian” (maybe spoilers lol):

    • If you rush things, you might leave something behind that will cost you a lot more later
    • You need to have buffer in your schedule for the inevitable disasters
    • If you have impossible deadlines, limited resources, overworked staff, and decide to skip testing to meet deadlines, don’t expect things to go smoothly
    • If your stuff doesn’t work, see if there’s some Chinese alternative. Or look for some sort of coffee-powered genius to come up with a miracle solution
    • If you make a unpopular decision, your staff might go off on their own and risk their lives trying to complete the mission
    • Problems will occur at almost every step, be prepared to make stuff up as you go along
    • Solve one problem at a time until you get to go home

  • “Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could do. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • Egx was a welcome escape, although my feet are close to dead (hopefully I manage to get a seat on the train back to london). Didnt get to try too many games, the queues for the big aaa releases were ridiculous. Spent most of the time walking around and watching other people play. Nintendo booth was the most fun, I hung out at the sony one only for sfv. Lots of indies to see, some with very nice/clever premises

  • Apparently it was a bad day to take a train to birmingham for egx as there’s a rugby world cup match there today; the train is jam packed and i might be standing for 2hrs :/

  • I finished the US run of The Office on Netflix, took me a few weeks (9 seasons). Started watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia but then I found out it’s like 10 seasons, not sure if I should do like another short series first. Any suggestions?

  • So there’s a new payment card for the Metro Manila rail lines and they decided to call it “beep”? I would have thought they’d want to name it after some sea animal like HK’s Octopus or London’s Oyster. I guess Hipon or Bangus doesn’t sound as good
