  • Michael Daniel V. Samson Joel Caisido remember this? :p For some reason I had a copy of the programme from the year after we won. (Pisay apparently did not send a team for the ‘95 event). I remember the last question was some area computation where we knew the formula from a booklet Mike had that we coincidentally read just before the final round.

  • I found an old Octopus card in my possessions, do these things expire? Joshua C. Agarrado did I borrow one from you and forgot to give it back?

  • I’ve often read that our country has the second-highest cost of electricity in Asia (or are we the highest already?) Has there been any study or analysis conducted and published that provides a breakdown of why we have such high costs? Is it solely due to Ramos-era expensive IPP contracts? If so, how long until we can get out of these contracts? Can we renegotiate them somehow, or at least the provisions that are disadvantageous to the government/public? Or are we overpaying for some other components such as labor, fuel, components, maintenance, distribution, etc costs? Are our power plants more expensive? Can we compare cost breakdowns with our neighbors to find out? I would think that if you were a newly-elected President appointing a secretary to the Department of Energy the first two things you would ask for would be (a) an analysis like the questions above need; and (b) a list of proposals to drive down energy costs. But I don’t recall Erap, Gloria or PNoy coming out with any such analysis or plans. (Aside from the WESM which doesn’t appear to have been successful in driving down prices) Anyone on my feed have more knowledge on this topic, anyone involved in the national power generation and distribution systems (wala ba mga EE diyan lol)?

  • Why do we have the Barangay LGUs? I’m not convinced of their usefulness. Is it necessary to have a local government unit below the city level? Do other countries have an equivalent unit of governance?

  • Jinggoy’s privilege speech is actually great!

    1. It’s like he’s basically given up on denying misdeeds and just wants to take down as many people as he can with him.

    2. Even if all the things he says are true, all of this stuff coming out can only be good for transparency and for catching those who have done us wrong and for preventing similar future shenanigans

Now we just have to avoid falling into the trap of being confused by #1 (which was the obvious intent) and still prosecute the hell out of him and his cohorts

  • To the Chinese people who are good at math (redundant?): Aren’t you bothered by the fact that si chin (four of any number except four) is a higher prize than sam hong (three fours), despite the former having a higher probability?

  • There’s this picture going around where Sen. Miriam is advocating that only taxpayers should get to vote. I hope people realize that the logical next step to that is that people who pay more taxes should get more votes. It’s a slippery slope towards money being more important than citizenship.

  • So in this dream, I was taking part in some sort of problem-solving contest. The other participants were people I knew (relatives, friends, coworkers and the like). The fate of the world may have been on the line or something. Anyway, they give us the problems to solve and there’s three questions and the questions are hard: each question gives you a bunch of real-world facts and you have to find out a specific piece of information, but it looks they’ll be requiring a lot of computation and stuff. I ask I can go do the solving in my room (conveniently, the contest is taking place at our old house back in Kamias), so I go there and boot up TWO computers and start writing programs/scripts to do computational work, internet searches, pattern analysis, etc. I’m at this for a while and there’s no progress so I decide to go back and check how the other participants were doing. One of them tells me he’s already answered like 10-15 questions and I’m like “What, weren’t there only 3 questions?” He tells me to go back and check the paper. I look for the paper they gave me with the questions and sure enough there were actually 5 pages of questions, and the later pages were easy questions like multiple choice, essay, with some that can be answered subjectively etc. I facepalm and sit down with a pen to start answering the questions. Someone might have also put a Lego Transformer (it was a G1 Autobot - Trailblazer. This fact is irrelevant, but I like it) on the desk while I was answering. It was around this time I woke up. And that’s why I’m already awake.

  • So, the way I’d handle the traffic thing (in addition to the promised fixed salary for bus drivers and removal of colorums) is to try to reduce yung number of cars on the roads in conjunction with improving public transportation. I’d add taxes on cars used in Metro Manila (as in may sticker for cars that have paid the tax; no sticker = no driving in Metro Manila, and stickers have to be renewed every X years, and cars that are too old won’t get renewed) the funds earned can be used to pay for better public transpo. I’d add an additional train line along C5 parallel to MRT3 and probably another one on the other side of EDSA somewhere - public transpo needs to get to the point where everyone, even car owners would be more comfortable taking public transpo. Sorry to car-owning friends, but if we keep adding more vehicles, we’re going to end up like that Indian city with parking problems everywhere.

  • Based on social media and discussions among people in the voting precinct, it feels like this time around a lot more people went out to vote and made wise and responsible choices. I hope new voters don’t get too discouraged by the results; we’ve had idiots in the senate before, we can survive them (her?) again. We can’t change the outcome anymore, but we should stay vigilant during the counting and figure out what we need to do to make things better next time around. Our responsibility doesn’t end with one vote. Cheers :D

  • This is a figurine of one of my favorite anime characters Roy Mustang, I’m a bit fond of it. But because I’m a terrible person with a bad memory, I don’t remember who gave it to me (I seem to recall it was an exchange gift type of deal). Will the terrific person who gave it to me please raise their hand so I can say thanks again?

  • So Globe has this new offer where a prepaid user can customize his promo to control the amount of text, calls, data, etc. he gets under his own budget. Seems like a bad idea to me, given that the vast majority of users will just be confused by the customizability/choices and will just take one of their predefined plans/promos. The only ones who will take advantage would be power users that would optimize it in such a way that Globe would be making minimal money off of them
