By request, I did an informal survey among people in the neighborhood while I was out on my afternoon walk. Yes, nang-abala ako ng tao! Ang shy ko pa naman!
I always ask the same line of questions (“Pwede po magtanong? Survey lang po: sino po ang iboboto ninyong presidente?” If they hesitate, I follow up with “Ok lang po kung wala pa”) People listed on the same line were asked as a group. Here are my totally unscientific, anecdotal, meaningless results, presented without further comment:
-
Aleng tagaprobinsya - Binay
-
2 security guards sa subdivision - Poe, Poe
-
guard sa sanglaan - Binay or Roxas
-

So I watched a couple of eps of the new Criminal Minds spin-off Beyond Borders featuring Gary Sinise’s FBI team intervening in crimes with American victims in other countries. I’m tempted to keep watching solely for the eventual episode set in the Philippines where there are militant leftists protesting against imperialist interference in local affairs

Earlier I was walking along Mindanao avenue and there was a guy hanging campaign materials for a councilor candidate on a wire running between two trees on the side of the road. Parang di naman private property and definitely not common poster area. Should I have accosted him?

Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice Spoiler-Free Review:
- (Edit) OK lang panoorin, wag lang magexpect na super ganda ang story. Entertaining naman mga fight scenes :p
- not a fan of Affleck’s Batman. Too gun-friendly, and he doesn’t really show a Bruce Wayne persona. He’s dark and brooding and grim in and out of the suit
- Jeremy Irons as Alfred was ok, but he looks like Tony Stark
- Eisenberg’s Luthor is not the same as any of the previous Luthors. He’s a manic genius, closer perhaps to the Riddler
- a number of plot details don’t really make any sense. Need to suspend disbelief quite a bit
- Snyder is too in love with his slow-motion scenes trying to make everything dramatic
- there are a number of sequences that don’t mesh well together, like Snyder is randomly jumping between scenes that don’t cohere
- in fact, there are particular scenes that feel like “WTH is this scene for, Snyder is just indulging himself now”
- it’s like Superman needs to realise that Lois Lane is more trouble than she’s worth
- yay cameos of future JLers
- the actual BvS showdown looked great, and went pretty much the way you’d expect
- Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman was great
- I liked the final battle sequence
- many, many things pointing towards the eventual JL movie
- IMAX? Probably not worth it. Not too much 3d stuff
- Post-credits scene: NO. Or so the internet tells me, we didn’t bother to wait
- I can see why the reviewers kind of ripped the movie apart. They definitely need to work more on tightening up the movies, but overall this was better than Man of Steel I think.

I sat down to write a poem
Surely it couldn’t be that hard
To stitch words together In rhyme and iambic pentameter
My fingers spun across the keys
And words spilled out in twos and threes
My first efforts didn’t feel like poetry
More like rhyming words trying to tell a story
Dozens of lines discarded
Why did the words elude me?
Are they hidden there, in some unknown shadow of my mind
Running away, burrowing deep, when I turn a corner?
Was I not good enough?
Do I need to find a way to light a spark?
Or maybe poetry isn’t something you force into the light
Maybe poetry only comes to us in the dark

Daredevil Season 2 spoiler-free review:
- Punisher and Karen were great
- Matt and Elektra, kind of weird, but I guess it’s okay
- great fight scenes and cinematography as usual
- the plot is less tightly focused than compared to S1, there’s a lot of things going on at the same time.
- it starts a bit slow, but picks up later on, then slow down a bit again and picks up again
- they pick up some leftover threads from S1, all the surviving major players make an appearance
- the Daredevil costume feels so weird, and it feels like it sometimes changes in shading/composition across episodes (it makes it harder to draw lol)
- there’s some romantic tension being formed but it feels a bit off or maybe even forced
- I want to complain about some (minor) things, but it’s hard to do that without you know, spoilers lol
- ending felt weaker than S1

My reactions to the first #PiliPinasDebates2016:
As expected, nothing too difficult was discussed, and we got mostly motherhood statements from the candidates.
Format was a bit strange, what is the format for debates in other countries? Shouldn’t all candidates be allowed to respond to each question?
Not enough time to give meaty answers really, and did we really need so many ads?
Poe well-prepared, ready with answers and statistics, not much implementation details though
Duterte having trouble articulating himself sometimes, keeps harping on fixing everything within 3-6 months, without elaborating how. IDK much about Davao, but my impression is he didn’t do that in 3-6 months. But I am happy that his “killing criminals” rhetoric now includes the rider that it must be within the scope of the law
Binay’s preparation for this debate seems to have been to keep telling himself “I’m a decisive leader!!! I’m a decisive leader!!! I’m a decisive leader!!!”
Miriam no longer has the fire she used to have, stumbled a few times. She could have a much stronger rebuttal as to why we the constitution has that ban on political dynasties if only her VP candidate’s family wasn’t the reason we needed to put that there!
Duterte agreeing with people and insisting that implementation is the problem - upvotes. But none of the candidates detailed implementation plans.
Discussion on policies and issues generally one-sided - everyone agrees with the stuff that has to be done, but no one really talks about details of how, etc. Reflection of the fact that we don’t really have parties with differing ideologies (aside from Duterte’s federalism. Oh and Binay’s insistence that political dynasties are cool LOL)
Aside from Binay getting shot down a few times, nothing too fiery/exciting happened. Candidates didn’t really do rebuttals so much as elaborate on their own plans
Roxas’ closing statement is a much better approach than all his political ads and strategies so far
I know all too well that you can’t really form an accurate assessment of a person from one interview so I don’t really expect that the candidates will have room to espouse all the details of their platforms, but I hope the succeeding debates can at least give more challenging questions and a bit more time for the candidates to elaborate.
I missed round 1 (rewatched the archive), but on my way home I noticed the security guards in our subdivision listening to the debate on the radio. Say what you will about the debate’s format and lack of challenging questions, but the fact that we are having any sort of discussion at all that manages to capture the public’s attention is already an improvement. Hopefully the organizers of the next two debates manage to learn something and try to improve on the first one

#PiliPinasDebates2016 Tomorrow will be the first Presidential debate. If I were hosting the debate, here are some of the questions I would want each candidate to address:
- if you weren’t running, who would you vote/support for president?
- how can we educate voters to make better decisions so that candidates are elected based on merit and not merely on name recall or popularity?
- how can we reform campaign finance, so that it becomes transparent and candidates are not beholden to campaign donors?
- how can we improve the slow pace of justice in the philippines?
- do you think there is currently too much power in the executive? what improvements can we make to have the legislature and the judiciary be more independent?
- how can we make it easier and more attractive to start small/medium enterprises?
- how can we minimize red tape in government transactions and make government agencies more efficient?
- how can we make it more difficult for government employees from extorting citizens or otherwise abusing their authority? how can we make it easier to catch those who do?
- what safeguards can we place in the procurement process to avoid getting bad deals for the government?
- what are your plans to use ICT to improve government services and transparency?
- what are your plans for reducing the high cost of electricity in the country?
- do you think the people are getting what they deserve for the taxes they pay? what are your plans for reducing the tax burden on our people?
- What plans do you have for improving our education system to increase literacy rates, reduce drop out rates and in general improve the quality of our schools?
- (Edit:) How can we get rid of the culture of patronage politics, or people expecting politicians to give them favors in exchange for support?
- What are your plans for making sure the economic growth experienced by the country improves the lives of more people?
I suspect none of the above topics will be discussed tomorrow though. And if ever, most will reply with generic/motherhood statements. But maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Here we go, DEADPOOL spoiler-free review:
- definitely not for kids; violence, sex, nudity, you name it
- as you’d expect of a Deadpool movie, lots of jokes, one-liners and fourth wall-breaking. It’s a barrel of laughs
- the plot is mostly straightforward
- some really nice shots and set pieces
- lots of references and fan service
- great supporting cast; hope to see them again in the sequel
- Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead were great
- I kind of want to read more Deadpool comics now
- This movie is better than: Ant-Man (sorry Scott!)
- Magugustuhan ba ni Mama: NO
- Post-credit scene: YES

2016 Book #5: Triumph of the Darksword. I read the first two books of this trilogy back in high school, and I recently decided to get a used copy from Amazon (special thanks to the courier, you know who you are). I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to dive into the third book without having to re-read the first two, with a general recollection of the events from the first book still intact. I found it a bit heavy-handed with the prose, as the writers spend a couple of paragraphs in each scene for each character to ponder in self-doubt, fear or despair. I forget if that’s something they did in the Dragonlance books as well. The plot of this book went in a direction that I wouldn’t have been able to predict, but I guess the ending was satisfying enough. Time to read: Eight episodes of Battlestar Galactica

2016 Book #3: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I think I actually caught the tail end of the movie for this on cable at some point. Easy read, started it last night to get sleepy and finished up this morning. My reading rate is still a bit slow, I blame Netflix!

Finally finished Wind Waker HD, great game. Didn’t bother with the completion, there’s just too much other stuff to do. If the game had achievements, I’d think about it lol

Did a quick trial of Netflix PH. I have a 4mbps BayanDSL connection and streaming was ok. Loading time was negligible for a tv episode, around 10-20 seconds for a movie. No buffering or anything encountered so far. Quality is decent (not sure how to tell what the resolution is, it doesn’t matter to me) The selection is as expected, kind of limited. Strangely, there is no House of Cards. Works with our Chromecast! Edit: All the other Netflix shows (aside from HoC) seem to be there. A number of shows I binged while I was in UK (The Office, Fringe, House MD, Fairy Tail) are not there. There are less movies than I would have expected (mukhang malayo pa sa US), but they seem to have all the Batmans for some reason. I suggest people take the free trial first to see if they like the content offered, though I suppose they will try to add more later.
